Intro

I'm Brandon Sneed. I wrote the book The Edge of Legend, I'm a journalist for GQ, ESPN The Magazine, and ESPN.com, and I edit HeyGoodCall.com

I live for great stories—finding them, telling them, living them. This is a running log of all that. It's a great life. (Read this, my short take on why stories are all that matter.)

The vision of a writer and how you (and Amazon) can help

Since there's never any easy way to go about shameless self-promotion, I'll just come right out with it: I could really use some help. Sales for The Edge of Legend are going great regionally, but we're now starting the initial phase of pushing it out into the rest of the world. And really, most of this work falls on the shoulders of me and Katie. That's part of the publishing deal.

I'll share more details later, but for now, there are two ways you can help. And they're really simple.

1. Go leave us a review on Amazon.

2. Go buy a book (or have your friends buy a book) on Amazon

Here's why it's important.

1. Amazon has become the gold standard for online book shopping. That's where I look for books first, and that's where pretty much everyone else looks first. If the book does well on Amazon, chances are it will do well everywhere else, too.

2. Reviews are the genuine thoughts of other people who read the book, not just marketing fancy talk by me or the publishing company. People want to hear from real people, and real as I am, nobody really expects me to go around bashing my book. Of course I wouldn't. So I'm not as credible a source about the book's quality as, oh, Joe Schmo next door who happened to read it. If you've read it, drop a review, and if your friends have read it, ask them to write one, too. It's really easy, takes just a few seconds, and it will really mean a lot. Thanks!

3. The more people buy on Amazon, the more the book's Bestsellers Rank goes up. Authors are notorious for checking this every five minutes, addicted to it like crack. Right now, Edge is completely off the radar, somewhere in the 800,000 range. No big deal; we haven't been pushing it on Amazon, so honestly, I'm surprised it's even that high. But if we can push the rank higher, perhaps eventually into the low thousands, then it'll start gaining more attention. And if it gains more attention, more people will buy it, and that means more people will read it. That's what this is all about. Getting the story out there. So go bug your friends to buy it through Amazon.

Remember, first and foremost, this book is about the story. It's not about me. It's not about Ant. It's not about making money or getting famous or anything like that. It's about sharing this incredible story. I just so happened to write it. Ant just so happened to live it. This is all about the story, because of the impact the story can have.

I just need your help to make it happen.

Bonus Material: My dreams.

True--I did write The Edge of Legend because I knew it would provide me a fantastic calling card for the future. For my career. And if the book somehow does blow up and become mad successful, I'll milk that for all it's worth. Yeah, I like money, and these days, you really, really need it in America. Writing is, unfortunately, a business as well as an art. If I want to keep doing what I'm doing, I need to make money off it, or else I can't keep writing while also providing for my family down the road.

Above all, my dream is to give my wife--and, eventually, my family--the life my father provided for me. Growing up, I wanted for nothing, had all I needed, and was free to spend a lot of time trying to figure out what I wanted to do. I am as happy as I have ever been in my life now, but I would have never gotten here had it not been for his and my mother's hard work.

I once longed to leave. For a long time, I had this feeling of wanderlust, wanting to forsake America and all its capitalism and greed. I wanted to get away from all the noise and simply escape to a society and culture more simple, more gentle, more pure. It would be my way of fighting the madness of modern society.

I feel differently now. Anywhere there are humans, there will be madness of some sort. We are complicated creatures, and we're not always the brightest, and so chaos happens. I've come to embrace, rather than disdain, the chaos. In that, I have found peace. It doesn't mean I agree with the chaos, but I've learned that my energy is best reserved for the things I can control. In the midst of this, I've discovered a purpose, a calling, to what I do. Maybe I'll tell you it in detail one of these days. For now, just know that to fulfill that purpose, I must become successful at my craft and my work. Since I am ridiculously blessed, my craft and work are largely the same now.

I'm blessed beyond reason to live the life I live. It's not come without risk or sacrifice....only, the risk and sacrifice, the investment, is giving its return. I am not rich. I am not famous. I am not "somebody." But I am happy. I am living a dream. I have a vision for my future. I know my place in this world because I know the One Who made me and it. There is nothing else that I need.

What are your passions? And how can you better pursue them?
