I live for great stories—finding them, telling them, living them. This is a running log of all that. It's a great life. (Read this, my short take on why stories are all that matter.)

A very nice step forward - My story about the Spartan Race on ESPN.com Page 2

Last night ESPN Page 2 published my story about the Spartan Race. (Read it by clicking here.)

Needless to say, I’m incredibly stoked.

For one, the story came out amazingly. Very rarely do stories come together as fluidly as this one did. All of the guys were great to talk to, and I’ll be completely honest, they inspired me. Some of the things we discussed—some of which made it into the story; many of which did not, which I need to blog about in the next couple of days—I’ve been thinking about ever since.

And of course, it’s a great thing to add to the resume (which I did the moment I saw it was really published) and a great piece to add to the Portfolio (which I did right after I updated the resume).

It’s also been awesome to see it shared—around 100 Facebook shares according to the little icon when I last checked—and see a story nobody really knew about get put out for thousands of people to read. What’s beautiful about this is how I can see it doing so much good. It didn’t make it into the story because the guys are still nailing down some details, but the Spartan Race organizers are working on raising money for various charities through the events. Hopefully through this additional exposure, they can do even more for those causes.

(Check them out at SpartanRace.com.)

It just feels good, seeing a story go from what felt like a kind of dumb idea to published product that is getting plenty of attention.

Of course, this is only a step, not the ultimate goal. But it's a good step, and I feel greatly privileged to do what I do for a living. The editors at ESPN have been great to work with, and I look forward to working more with them in the future.

Anyway, go check it out. And meanwhile, stay tuned to the blog. I’ve been having some pretty gnarly writer’s block today, but I’m going to try to fight through it this afternoon and evening. Lots of thoughts based off this, and about some other things, so stick around.

Congrats! It's only the beginning, but it's still awesome.
