Picasso Charged $5K For One Pencil Stroke

Pablo Picasso was sketching in the park when the bold woman approached him. It's you! she said. Picasso! And she insisted that he sketch her portrait.

He agreed. He studied her for a moment. Then he made a single pencil stroke on the paper, picked it up, and handed it to her.

It was perfect, the woman gushed. How did you do that? How did you capture my essence in but one stroke—one moment? Never mind—how much do I owe you?

Five thousand dollars, the artist said.

She wasn't so happy anymore. She blubbered, wondering, How could you ask for so much for something that took only one second?

Madame, Picasso replied, It took me my entire life.
