Welcome

I'm Brandon Sneed. This is my blog. It's basically an online notebook where I highlight good writing, storytelling, journalism and other acts of creativity, and explore how such things are made.

I'm an author and journalist who writes about people, sports, science, nature, and more. I love learning, adventures, life, and stories. I've covered everything from a guy who played Division I basketball while battling cancer ... to golf courses that eat golfers ... to turkey vultures invading a town. You can read all those and more below.

GoodSports: Brackets With Benefits Raises $10,000

Brackets With Benefits took the annual March bracket madness and turned it into something to raise money for people trying to do good in the world.

It was put on by Citizen Effect, a Washington, DC-based entrepreneurial nonprofit that gives citizens the resources they need to do some philanthropic project of their choice.

It worked about how most bracket pools worked: Participants donated $10, filled out a bracket, and then moaned and groaned as VCU and Butler wrecked everything. Winners also received prizes like iPads, Flip HD cameras, and TOMS Shoes gift packs. All donations went to funding Citizen Effect projects.

Nearly 1,000 people competed and raised $10,000.

Thank you for the post, Brandon. After the overwhelming response for this year's tourney, Brackets with Benefits will definitely be back for a third round next year and we'd love to keep you informed and to stay connected.

All the best!
