Intro

I'm Brandon Sneed. I wrote the book The Edge of Legend, I'm a journalist for GQ, ESPN The Magazine, and ESPN.com, and I edit HeyGoodCall.com

I live for great stories—finding them, telling them, living them. This is a running log of all that. It's a great life. (Read this, my short take on why stories are all that matter.)

Keep up with me on Twitter and Facebook

Why I Wish NZT Was Real. Or, What I'm Up To.

My wife wishes I'd quit referencing NZT. So I probably should. She's smarter than me and so she's usually right about these things. So I'll (try to) make this my last reference.

NZT is the superdrug that almost kills Bradley Cooper's character in the spectacularly mediocre but remarkably fun film Limitless. He survives to (SPOILER!!!) go from struggling pathetic writer (hm, familiar ...) to President of the United States. I'm pretty sure a real-life version already exists in powder form—see: cocaine, crack—and since that's sort of illegal I'll never actually get it.

And that's a bummer. Not because I want to be President. I'll let Obama have that job. Worst job ever. Everyone hates you, people only like you if you do what they want you to do, and in four years you lose all your hair and what's left turns gray. Although, I guess you learn about Area 51 and whether we really have aliens controlling the planet and where the frack Stonehenge and the pyramids came form.

Anyway. There's only so much coffee can do. My friend Brandon says to start trying 5 Hour Energys, and not the red ones but the black ones because they have like 8000% of your daily needed value of Vitamin B12. That could be useful, because here's what's going on in BSneedVille right now, in no particular order:

  • Launched HeyGoodCall.com this week, and I'm trying to update it at least three times a day. Right now I'm the sole writer/editor/manager for the site/Facebook page/Twitter feed. I'm also trying to, you know, get readers because why else would you write? The site basically covers sports people trying to be good people. To be specific, it's based around philanthropy/charity work athletes and such are doing, but also covers other fun stuff. Go check it out. Follow it on Twitter. Facebook it. Etcetera.
  • Freelancing like crazy, as always. Exciting times are upon BSneedVille: My first major, big, long story in a national publication comes out Oct. 7 in ESPN The Magazine. It's several thousand words long and the story just consumed me for months. Cannot WAIT for that to come out. I'm also working on other things for ESPN The Magazine, ESPN.com, SLAM, Coastal Living, Atlanta and the Good Men Project. Which exciting, because I'm doing things now that I thought would take me much longer to do—writing for national publications is crazy and awesome and a dream that I'm just trying not to totally screw up at this point. I'm just trying to keep up the good momentum and ride this good mojo because I feel like if I slow down now I'll get left behind. However, this makes me insane, because I'm also:
  • In my first semester of grad school. And I'm taking 12 hours/four classes. Three are writing workshops. And I'm working two assistantships. So yeah. I don't sleep much. And I'm getting all insecure about my writing because people are always analyzing it—and I'm PAYING FOR THIS. What is wrong with me?

So, yeah. Not much sleeping going on. I am drinking lots of coffee and sniffing lots of lemons. But more on that later.

Anyway, just thought you might like to know.

Now, your turn. I want to know what you've been up to. What dreams ya chasin'? And how's that going?
