Welcome

I'm Brandon Sneed. This is my blog. It's basically an online notebook where I highlight good writing, storytelling, journalism and other acts of creativity, and explore how such things are made.

I'm an author and journalist who writes about people, sports, science, nature, and more. I love learning, adventures, life, and stories. I've covered everything from a guy who played Division I basketball while battling cancer ... to golf courses that eat golfers ... to turkey vultures invading a town. You can read all those and more below.

UNC Fan Cries, Florida Gulf Coast Rocks

Because Mondays are terrible, I give you this:

His buddy looks super proud to be there beside him in that moment.

Although I won't lie, I felt about the same way when Butler went down. I'd picked them to play Duke in the national championship game, so my bracket is dunzo.

But at least we all have Florida Gulf Coast, right? Are they a fun team to watch, or are they the MOST FUN TEAM TO WATCH?

How are your brackets doing?

Hope you had a great weekend and have a great Monday. I'll have some music up soon that should help you through the rest of the day and the week.

Extras: Checking In With Greg Cauley, UNC's Biggest Fan

College sports' ultimate fan, Greg Cauley, who's been to every UNC football game and home basketball game since 1985, was there in person when Carolina lost to Kansas in St. Louis last weekend. (If you're like, "Who the heck is Greg Cauley"—I recently profiled him for GQ.) He emailed me last week. We got to talking. Which is good, because I've had some concerned folks asking me about him. Here's how he's doing.

Duke vs. UNC — Which Side Are You On? And Why?

(This is an updated version of the original post.)

The Greatest College Basketball Rivalry Ever resumed this week.

Duke vs. Carolina. At 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 9, they threw down. Carolina absolutely torched Duke in the first half, led 43-29 at the break, and my wife looked at me and simply said, "I am sad."

Duke jumped on the comeback train and won, 79-73, and Katie went to bed happy.

If you read this blog last night, you already heard this, but there aren't enough comments yet for me to be satisfied. When I posted this yesterday afternoon, I didn't know who I was pulling for. I eventually decided, and I'll write about that sometime in the next few days.

Meanwhile, I want to know: Which team is yours, and why?
